The spontaneous exchange of information usually takes place during the investigation of offences. These exchanges of information generally take place on a police-to-police basis prior to arrest.

Competent Authority

* receive the request/decision for judicial cooperation

* receive the request/decision for judicial cooperation Prosecution Service/Police/Revenue. The Garda Commissioner (Police Chief), where the information is required for information/intelligence purposes only or the Minister for Justice, where it is required for use as evidence. If the information given is subsequently required for use as evidence a formal request to the Central Authority must be made. The practical procedures for the execution of this measure are made by An Garda Síochána (Irish Police Force).
