On 18th October 2017, the 9th National Correspondents Meeting of the European Judicial Network (EJN) took place in The Hague under the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The meeting was chaired by the Estonian Presidency who welcomed the participants and kicked off the session by presenting the main priorities under its Presidency, among those the proposal for a Regulation on the mutual recognition of freezing and confiscation orders.

Several topics of the upcoming 49th Plenary Meeting of the EJN in November in Tallinn were also highlighted. The Estonian Presidency announced that the meeting will focus on the discussion of the first experiences of the application of the European Investigation Order (EIO) and the application of recent case law from the European Court of Justice regarding the European Arrest Warrant (EAW).

The secretary to the EJN underlined the value of the outcomes of the 48th Plenary Meeting workshops as well as of the activities achieved by the EJN, particularly in relation to the EIO. For instance, the EJN Secretariat has developed a new EIO area on the EJN website to facilitate the access to all available information on this instrument.

The EJN Secretariat informed about the development regarding relations with other judicial networks dedicated to international judicial cooperation in criminal matters. Ensuring cooperation outside of the EU has proved to be essential for the effectiveness and functioning of the EJN.

Ongoing projects

The reorganisation of the Judicial Library has been finalised and the new interface was displayed to the National Correspondents. This new version of the Library will soon be available on the EJN website and will make it much easier to find the information.

Furthermore, a new online tool for monitoring the information on the EJN website was highlighted. This new tool will assist the EJN Tool Correspondents and the EJN Secretariat to maintain the website and keep it up to date. Also, the translation of the EJN website was discussed and the implications of linking from the eJustice Portal to the EJN website.

The Estonian Presidency thanked the National Correspondents for their participation and welcomed everyone to the 49th Plenary Meeting of the European Judicial Network, which will take place in Tallinn on 22nd -24th November 2017.
